Our family is currently exploring the idea of starting a couple of different businesses. Several ideas are being floated, and nothing is firm yet, but the energy is flowing and ideas are popping.
We come into this with a variety of skills and experience in a number of fields - finance, research, investor relations, accounting, management, computer modeling, experience with start-ups, resource development, alternative energy, human development, psychology, human relations, marketing, teaching, cooking, writing.
Surely we can create a business opportunity, don't you think?
If fact, I would bet that you have family and/or friends that come with a variety of skill sets that create something completely different when you put them all together. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
I would also bet that same set of family/friends have some great ideas - just simmering on the back burner.
New ideas, new businesses, fresh starts. I think we're going to have create our own opportunities in the future. Maybe we can do it the way it should be done - with mindfullness, gratitude, and environmental awareness.

it is definitely a great time to diversify...not sure if i would want to invest in creating a static business with high overhead though with the volatility of the markets...
Brian - We're thinking something small that can grow with the family. A commerical kitchen, a blog that does all of the research on companies one would like to know more about before investing, etc.
You are always coming up with such genuinely interesting ideas. I admire you for that. Good luck and keep us informed even about the process.
I say: Go for it!
I second Bruce: chaaarge! Straight ahead!!! Sounds like you guys together have enough skills to start up something interesting! But don't forget that commune you planned on living on... like-minded people with complementary skill sets in ecological hobbit houses, right? That was a great idea too! ;o)
Sounds like a lot of fine skills you share and I hope the right combination comes together for you.
Good luck! It can be difficult to work with family, but I suspect you would be able to pull it off.
We're doing the same thing! Perhaps this is a trend. In changing times, we must all change, too, and change our approaches to living.
I don't know why I even bother being surprised by the timing of information anymore...Here we are in the midst of a plethora of ideas (as well as a few actions) for increasing our income using our own skills and creativity and I read this post!
I agree that there are lots of changes happening ,and people are looking closer to home for business opportunities.
