Am I The Only One...

Am I the only one who doesn't care about the Oscars? The self-congratulatory and aggrandizement in Hollywood has never been remotely interesting to me. I, like most women, enjoy beautiful people in beautiful clothes. But you get plenty of opportunity to see these ensembles in magazines, news programs, tabloids, on-line aggregate blogs, etc. It never occurred to me to have a party, dress up in my finest and drink champagne while watching the Oscars. In fact, it seems kind of sad. How many Americans can actually afford the $25 for two people, plus maybe a small popcorn, drink and a movie, these days? Let alone all of the movies up for Oscars? Our Hollywood actors, along with our steroid-induced athletes really do not deserve our adulation. They give each other plenty of it themselves, along with ridiculous paychecks. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good movie and have many actors and actresses that I really like. But not so much as to watch constant awards. How many in just the last month or so?

No, lets start putting our enthusiasm behind those that are truly making a difference in the world. Maybe have an award for the best clean-energy idea, or for those scientists working on a cure for cancer, HIV, Hep C, Lou Gehrig's Disease. Now that's a nasty little bugger. If someone was to come up with a cure for that, I might just get dressed up, invite a few friends, cook my finest, and watch that award being made.

Hi Lover of Life,

Perhaps if we painted our scientists in glitter and put them in sexy outfits on a red carpet they would get more attention. I don't usually tune in to the Oscar stuff, but if I happen to be passing a screen with it on, the beautiful people suck me into the TV by the eyeballs. It's gross, really!

Every year, whether or not to watch the Oscars is a dilemma in our home with my husband saying "Why do you watch this every year when it's usually boring and you rarely see any of the nominated movies prior to the award ceremony and all Hollywood does is have one awards show after another etc etc??"

I watch them anyway. I know they are narcisscistic but I grew up watching them and when I was younger there weren't all these other awards shows to minimalize them. As teenagers, we went out of our way to see every movie in the theatre so by the time the awards rolled around, we all had an opinion.

I remember Barbra Streisand in her truly ugly see through pants suit winning for "Funny Girl", a great movie. I was modeling lingerie. No kidding! I worked for a really nice lady who hosted lingerie shows in women's homes. Kinda like Tupperware only it was underwear. We stopped the modeling show long enough to watch Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Picture.

My folks always watched them. They loved Bob Hope and he hosted for years. He'd always joke about never winning one himself. I loved him!

I have great nostalgia for the Oscars even though it doesn't fit in with the show of today. I agree with you, we celebrate all the wrong things in our society. I just haven't broken this habit. Maybe some day...

Yeah, I do remember when it was a pretty big deal, California Girl, and I remember Barbara getting the Oscar for "Funny Girl" - one of my favorite movies! But I guess I just lost interest over the years, especially with so many award shows.

Butternut, you may have an idea with the glitter and red carpet!

I love seeing the outfits, but usually I haven't seen the films and so I really don't care.

Our movie stars are our royalty in America. People need kings and queens.

Don't ask me why, but we love them.

I do know what you mean and you have a good point about celebrating the overlooked scientists and more, but i believe that movie making is an art and the actors artists. I come into contact with some celebrities through my work, but they get the same courtsy i give everyone. I don't watch t.v. so i don't know about other award shows, but to me the Acadamy Awards is a classic and I love it. I thought tonite was exceptional. I thought Slumdog Millionaire was brilliant.
