Say what you will about the infamous Branjelina - but they pledged the same amount of money as the entire Peoples Republic of China to Haiti - $1,000,000!
Hmmm ... couple that with the lastest on children's jewelery being produced in China high in cadmium - a known poison - sending parents to search toy boxes, and we can see who has the more generous spirit.

Funny you'd mention the cadmium jewelry as I cut out an article about it in Thursday's paper for my husband to read after work. With it, I cut out another article appearing on the same page about the damn drywall that China is selling to the U.S. Here's an online article, one of many. I go out of my way to avoid purchasing anything made in China.....and sometimes it is impossible because there are no competing products. How did we get to this point?

They are a couple that really do walk their talk. Let's all give what we can now!! My heart is just feeling bruised by the immeasurable suffering in Haiti. Let's send strength, endurance and courage to all the people who have put their lives on hold to go and help. It must be SO difficult for them too.
I think they are a tad weird, but their generosity makes that pale. Good for them.
I think this country lets WAY too many imports in.......which is why soon nothing will be made in this country.
I wish I had a million dollars to donate. I'm guessing that's about 1 percent of their combined income. Imagine how much money would be raised if everyone donated even one tenth of a percent...
And China...hrmph...love the people, love the food, hate the government.

Kudos to Brad and Angelina. China? We were in the market for an artificial Christmas tree last year and found them to all be made in China, and every one of them had lead warnings on the box, advising you to wash your hands EVERY time you touch the tree. Now, who touches the Christmas trees? Children ...
"To whom much is given, much is expected." I am guessing Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are familiar with this phrase. Good for them. Good for Haiti. China - phsst.. what a mess - corruption, pollution, human rights violations.
I also think Brangelina might be a bit strange, but they can certainly spotlight a situation by doing something like this. Haiti is breaking my heart. It's even worse that certain conservative pundits are saying they brought this on themselves.
I'm glad that they donated the money, and maybe that will inspire other people to donate too, but...maybe I'm in a cynical mood; do you think that a TINY part of their motive was the publicity? What happened to "not letting the right hand know what the left hand is doing?"
Very generous of them. On another note, being a tattooist wife, it is clear that Angelina needs a more experienced tattoo artist. :-)
They are also unsung heroes of New Orleans, giving more than just money. They always are more than just talking celebs, they back up what they believe in

Lydia - I read about the drywall - It's clear that they do not care about materials being toxic. And they are making so many of our everyday items. We arrived at this point because people wanted lower prices for everything. And our businesses did not feel an obligation to the people of this country to provide jobs and healthcare.
Brian - Leads in paints, cadmium when they can't use lead, toxic dog food, fillers in their own babies milk. This country is all about the money.
Bonnie - I agree! But I just found out the credit card I used online will extract fees - they're skimming off the top. A better way may be to use the texting, with 100% going to Haiti.
Hilary - I think there needs to be a consumer backlash. We may need to buy less, pay more for the things we buy, and have jobs that actually pay something back in our country.

Elizabeth - It's worth researching. I am very worried about all of the things we import that they are finding high lead, cadmium, and whatever is in the drywall, baby formula, etc. I am just really trying to not buy things from there - not always possible, but worth the effort.

Nice contrast to the comments by another successful person (at least money wise) the idiot Pat Robertson.
I've never understood how it is that although Haiti shares the same island that's home to the Dominican Republic the latter is almost an American state and the other has always been a pariah country. The damage would have been somewhat curtailed had their poverty not already been so dire. It's wonderful so many have been so generous but I hope better relations are established in future.
China is very good at making stuff cheaply but the price has always been in quality control. Since many of their factories belong to businesses that outsourced their labor from the US so people without jobs here can afford cheesy stuff is outrageous.

Call me cynical but I can never escape the impression celebrities donate money more for their own publicity than actual care. Ever since I heard of Christina Aguilera going over to Africa to hand out sneakers ("no food, but hey, just eat your shoe") I became a little cynical about celebrities and charity. No, take Oprah, she takes her money and builds schools in Africa with it. Now there's an example these celebrities may like to follow.
Still, these people could use the one million dollars for rescue work and everything, I suppose. As long as it's spent accordingly.
Robert - Make sure you don't have some of these items in your toybox. Including some toys painted with lead paint from China. Most people I know are just not buying any toys from there.
Linda - Their giving at least sets an example, I think. As for Pat Robertson - can he be any more cruel for a supposed "man of God"?
Susan - It is very interesting how the Dominican Republic and Haiti are treated so differently. As for China and cheap stuff that just ends up in landfills - I read that they make changes in specific designs and specifications after the papers are signed to save money and increase their profits.

Josephine - I have to admit, I have the same scepticism when it comes to celebrity giving - usually never done anonymously - but a million dollars for a good cause is still a million dollars.
