The Scary Drum

I have been thinking about taking a course that requires a drum, so when I found this one at the Farmer's Market the other day I jumped on it. It was made by a Native American from New Mexico who sets up a booth here at Lake Tahoe during the summer. This booth has beautiful, authentic items, made by the lady and her husband. Anyway, as soon as I got it home I tried it out. This activity absolutely freaked Lucy out ! She not only ran up the stairs, but would not even enter the room that held the drum --- all day! Occasionally she would peek around the corner, but refused to be in the same room as the offending instrument.

Have I mentioned that my dog is neurotic?

On another note, I've decided to take a break from blogging. I'm hoping it will inspire me to finish up a writing project. I will be dropping by and visiting you, however. And I will occassionally post when I feel a topic is interesting or important.

I'm in a funny mood these days. I'm not quite sure what is happening, but it appears other bloggers are feeling the same way as I've noticed several of you are thinking about a blogging break. Is it the Dog Days of Summer or something more? I guess only time will tell. Take care dear blogging friends.

You can't be too careful around those drums you know!

Have a wonderful, invigorating break!

Another of the blogs I follow posted the same thing today, taking a break. And I read somewhere someone's opinion that blogging was over, passé. Who knows. I see less traffic or at least fewer comments on mine. Is that because they are bored with me, bored with blogs?

best wishes on the writing project...have a great break...and try not to freak out the dog too much...smiles.

Maybe the drum came with the spirit of the person who owned it and that's what Lucy sensed.

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Kathy - Thank you!

Ellen - You could never be boring, but I've noticed the same thing. Is it just summer? Or something more? I guess time will tell.

Brian - My dog is neurotic - she started barking out our window at 3:30 a.m. this morning - I never did get back to sleep.

T- It is a very unique drum in that it is made much as the Native Americans made their drums hundreds of years ago. Maybe it was the cow-hide smell.

Have a wonderful and inspiring break Nancy. I've been noticing the same thing online - less of the blogs I follow are posting regularly and less comments as well!

I'm thinking it's just the summer, the desire to spend time doing other things before the weather changes and forces people to spend more time in sedentary activities. I, too, have been antsy and restless and only sporadically posting.
By the way, my dog feels the same way about the vacuum! Happy drumming:)

I hope you have a wonderful "break." I especially hope you have a grand time.
I have no idea what's going on within the blogsphere. Collective malaise? Dog (neurotic or otherwise) days?
And you're taking your leave at precisely the time you could be drumming up some interest in your writing. Still, I do recognize Lucy's neurosis, as do you. Perhaps you need to take her to the doggie psychologist.
Blessings and Bear hugs.

dogs can be so funny about strange "objects". Taking a break is always good practice even if you love what you are doing. Good Luck on the writing!!!

Just took a month break myself. Take care and blessings on you. I'll look forward to your return.
p.s. Our dog walked up to my husband's celtic drum, greeted and wagged her tail at it as if it was alive.

Whatever you end up doing, I know you will return to this place. I can only speak for myself, but your posts are always appreciated. Take some time for yourself and your other projects and come back when you're ready. I'll be here... :-)

Perhaps she senses something about the drum on a deeper level, like perhaps it is wolf skin?
Enjoy your break, I know the feeling I have had a couple long breaks since joining blog land.....

Best of luck with your writing project. Bang the drum slowly--maybe then the dog won't freak out ;)

Enjoy your break!

Nancy, I find that when I do take a break, I miss it, then come back refreshed and with more ideas:):) So, yes, I think I am getting pretty close to following your lead too:) Enjoy your break!

Neurotic? Lucy? Noooo....:):)

I reckon she is sensing something too.
Nancy, I sense you are going to feel so liberated with your drumming.xx

love the drum/doggie story! many implications there!

on the other note, you took the words right out of my mouth literally - i've been saying it aloud to myself even - just feeling funny - unfocused - unwhatever - and nothing is "fitting" - think i need to be out and about beating my own drum and dancin' to my own beat for a while - so hope your away time is all you need/want, lady! see u soon! till then, happy drummin'!!! ;)

I've been having a hard time blogging for at least a year but since I've only ever posted 7 or 8 times a month nobody has ever noticed. I hope you enjoy having a break and return refreshed when the urge strikes.

I haven't been able to get a post up about our Europe trip. It seems there are so many other things that are more important. Time seems to be flying by. Especially this summer! Take care and write when you want. I love your blog!!

Your dog is so cute...and smart. It senses something. What i don't know but it sure makes ya think. Mine sat the other night staring into the kitchen at something that was making her shiver. Dogs are pretty smart...and I'm thinking they're on to something.

I find that a lot of us tend to trail off somewhat in the summer. There's just that much more to do and if you want to accomplish a project, something has to give. Blogging takes a lot of time so that's a natural.

I wish you much luck on your writing and look forward to your return to blogging.

As for the drum... it's a beauty but the sound it makes and the action you exert to do so is just WRONG to a dog's ears and eyes. Plus he's neurotic. ;)

Enjoy your time, Nancy!

How did I not see this! I read your comment over on mine, didn't think you meant this blog. Well I love what you have done over here. So hopefully you will be back to it. Take the break it will help tremendously. Blogs like yours or anyones who is putting up thoughtful ideas and images and keeping up with responses is very rewarding to visit but also draining at times to keep up with. Sometimes you need to unplug and allow whatever is going to happen in your private life happen and be there fully for all of it. Then when you are ready you can come back refreshed and maybe with new stories or a new interest in maintaining it. I was glad I stopped mine when I did, because now I am excited about it again.

Hey all, come visit me for awhile. LOL- Shameless aren't I! Oh I know you know I'm just joking.

Love, love, love that drum! I too was have been wanting to sign up for one of those drumming circle classes. But struggled with doing so. But I will. I wish I had found something like that when I was in New Mexico. I would be playing that all night. Maybe it is the cow hide scent. Or maybe it is the energy of the vibration that bothers your puppy. Or, she is just neurotic. ;)

Life is beyond your keyboard so go and enjoy it. I too will of course check in with you when you are back.

Hi Nancy. Thanks for your visit and your kind words.

I took up drumming a couple of months ago, and absolutely fell in love - like I was born to do it! :) Before my second circle, my husband surprised me with my own Djembe...and it felt very special to me, because I *knew* the right drum would find me. It looks like your drum found you, too! Have you ever read, "When the Drummers Were Women"?? Amazing! :)

Seasons are starting to change here in the O.C. Maybe that energy is effecting blogging, too...people during a little more inward or something? Well, have a good blog break!!!

Nancy, what is it?? I am borderline freaked out because I'm a new blogger and feeling the pressure to post but my words seem to have dried up! I don't like it.

Have a wonderful break and good luck with your writing!

Nancy, thanks for dropping by this morning. I'm sorry you are having smoke problems too. I fear the smell of smoke has just about permeated everything around here.

On another note I love the idea of water, basil, lemons & cucumbers. It sounds refreshing; I'll have to try it.
