A Hopi Elder Speaks

A Hopi Elder Speaks

"You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour. Now you must go back and tell the people that this is the Hour. And there are things to be considered . . .
Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Know your garden.
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader."
Then he clasped his hands together, smiled, and said, "This could be a good time!"
"There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on to the shore. They will feel they are torn apart and will suffer greatly.
"Know the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above water. And I say, see who is in there with you and celebrate. At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, Least of all ourselves. For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.
"The time for the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves! Banish the word struggle from your attitude and your vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
"We are the ones we've been waiting for."

let go and push off to the middle of the river! that takes alot of courage don't you think? In light of how quickly everything is moving right now.. but thats where faith comes in.The end of this "We are the ones we have been waiting for" is SUCH a powerful statement. It always touches me..wonderful post.

So wise, and we called these people savages.

a lot of wisdom in those words...

Marlene - I love that statement, too. I wonder if the blog world is here so that people can make the connections they need to make. It expands our world so much.

ellen - Ironic, isn't it?

Brian - I agree.

"It is time to speak your truth, Create your community. We are the ones we've been waiting for." I think this is what we're doing in our blogs. Thanks for the reminder and the wisdom.

Grandmother - I think so, too!

Lots of wisdom there.
I like this "At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, Least of all ourselves."

It also reminds me of a phrase from my spirit guide, Dr. Peebles (1822-1922), "Lighten up, and don't take life so seriously."

Linda - Yes, good advice. Sometimes hard to do, especially with so much bad going on in the world.

Wisdom, truth, beauty defy all boundaries and are found across the board in so many different (and yet so much the same) cultural philosophies.

When you hear truth it resonates, doesn't it? Beautiful words.

Wise words, indeed.

The Hopi are simply astonishing. Great post, Nancy.

I have always been a great admirer of American Indian wisdom. Simple words, great meanings.

'We are the ones we are waiting for'

This speaks to your post of the other day - about habits, don't you think? Now is the time for all of US to DO and not wait or depend on others.

You are doing a lot of searching lately aren't you? I really feel your journey in your writing.

This is quite powerful. I think Maria Shriver used the closing words in California at an Obama rally. I hope you are having a great day. Blessings...Mary

Very profound. Thanks for sharing, Nancy!

And this is another way that you are helping to pull us together, to turn the tide of despair. Knowing that we can make a difference if we unite...

Bonnie - It surely does.

Willow - We should have listen to them many years ago.

d page - Thanks!

Trish & Rob - I think I will do a little more research on them.

Good Cook - The two posts do go together. The message is simple but I feel it is urgent. I seem to be on a constant search these days. Maybe related to all the problems in the Gulf?

Mary - I didn't know that. Thanks!

Natalie - I thought you might, :-)

ds - Thanks for reading it.

DJan - That is my feeling. As always - you get me. :-)

That is absolutely perfect.

"Do not look outside yourself for the leader."

It is my belief and my practice.

We could certainly learn a lot from this!

Leilani Tresise said...

wow! right on the mark! sheeshhh! i need to reread their words. Thank you Nancy!

Nancy said...

Butternut - You are a leader.

Pat - I think we're about to.

leilani - Like so many ancient civilizations, the Hopi seem to know what is happening before we are aware of it.

This is an amazing and beautiful piece. Very thoughtful; very hopeful.

But there is an inherent problem with some of this:

Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.

That speaks of co-operation, which, I have discovered, is virtually a lost art, when compared to "rugged individualism." Truth is that rugged individuals need each other, because not everyone can do everything. Co-operation is something in which I fervent believe, but which is constantly undermined by powerful people, who fear in it a loss of their status and power.
