Nancy, when I heard this guy on NPR the other day, I was mesmerized and looked up his photos at their site. In the piece there he also talked about his experience with bowhead whales - incredible!
This video should serve notice to everyone that our sea and sea creatures deserve our respect and protection. TBHITW and I are both scuba divers and have personally witnessed the curious nature, intelligence and beauty of life under the sea.

That is so beautiful...both on the part of the photographer as well as the mothering seal. We take so much fro granted and assume the worst when in fast, given as second chance, this seal was there to help. Yes, amazing!
I've had a chat with a Weddell seal (one of this seal's prey items) while in the ice-cuby water... but I think I'd be terrified to come face to face with one of these big fellas!
This is amazing and it warmed my heart so much. I agree with scarlethue that animals are so much more intelligent than we give them credit for. The other day, I heard that cowfish are as smart as dogs and can be trained.
I was not expecting this. Mothering creatures are all around us and we just don't see. She's a beautiful seal and I hope to God that she survives this heat wave coming.
What really got me is the egocentricity of us humans to think that we are the only ones who understand how to care for other foreign, amazing creatures. Thank you so much, Nancy, for sharing this, which I would of course have missed otherwise. What a great story...
Empathy and Kindness is not strictly found in humans only..This seal wanted to feed and nuture this strange species it found...out of some emotion it felt towards him...
i can honestly say nobody has ever brought me a penguin to eat, or pieces of a penguin, or even a dead penguin. and kudos to the cameraman for being vegetarian!
Another example of how little we truly know about animals and their motivation and behavior. Such a beautiful story and with world class video to back it up. Thanks, you deserve the POTW from Hilary for this post. Congrats.
