Perfect Market

I am preparing for my daughter and grandson, who will be on their way here this afternoon. So off I went to the local Farmer's Market in Kings Beach. The market is small, with less than ten vendors, but they have everything I want. I used to enjoy the one in Lake Oswego, when we lived in Portland, but it was big and took a couple of hours to scan and then shop. This one takes about two minutes to see what everyone has to offer. Then the shopping is over in less than half an hour. Perfect. More time to spend cooking and planning for my very special guests.

Look at these strawberries! It is so nice to be near California and all it has to offer in fruits and vegetables.

This is the view the vendors have while they are open:

Hope you are having a lovely day!

  1. What a view! The berries look delicious! I like the "little" markets. We have a couple of them locally.

  2. BERRIES! They look refreshing, even in the photo! Maybe I will have to exchange some sweet corn (in abundance here now) from Kansas! Enjoy your weekend. Two of my favorite bloggers in the same house....sheesh.

  3. Hi Nancy! Enjoy your daughter and grandchild's visit. Linda, The Good Cook, posted a recipe for a strawberry syrup a while ago . . . I thought of it when I read your post. So just in case you're up to it . . . http://thegoodcooknj.blogspot.com/2009/06/first-tuesday-of-month-and-strawberry.html Cheers!

  4. Kat - The little ones make shopping easy.

Expat - Loved the corn when we lived in the Midwest. Yes, both of us in the same house - now if only the grandson will let us blog...

Meeko - Wow, thank you! I am cooking a couple of her recipes in the next couple of days - she's a terrific cook!

  6. That fruit looks incredible. YUM.

I had a friend who lived in King's Beach, right on the water. It was a sleepy place way back then. Is it still?

  7. Brian - I took one of each! Great minds think alike... :-)

Reya - Not as sleepy as it once was, that's for sure! Not as bustling as South Lake or Tahoe City, however.

  8. Nancy, who is the other blogger? Your daughter, no doubt. But I get so intimidated when I look at your list that you follow. Can I have a hint? I wanna know because I have spent hours on here and I have to say, your posts are some of my most enjoyable. Your daughter's must be the same.

I am almost getting oversaturated by great blogs, but I am still caught by them and must... find... more.

  9. Those berries look scrumptious. What are those yellow ones called? I just got back from the grocery store with blueberries, but half of them are molded or bad. I wish we had a good farmer's market here in Las Vegas. We do have one, but it isn't very good. The fruit is nowhere near what your photos show. Enjoy. I'm making blueberry orange bread which I found at http://prosperinegoathill.blogspot.com/2009/07/blueberry-orange-bread.html
    Enjoy your grandkids.

  13. Those berries look so good! I found three strawberries this morning....my plants are bearing again. It must be the strange weather we have been having. I think I want a green house.

  14. I just came into my office from having a light supper of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and peaches. I KNOW it is not a "natural" mix, but how I love the luxury of mixing fruits. And there was your column! Have a wonderful visit. That story about LU was priceless as well. I think I'll go eat some more fruit now...

  15. What wonderful summer colours you do provide. Hope that you had a nice meal.

  16. Oh! Those berries look fabulous. Are you going to make a cobbler or just enjoy their inherent goodness out of hand??

Good for you for shopping the farmer's market!!

  17. DJ - My daughter's blog is Lost In Translation. A view of a 26-year-old's life and times. :-) And thank you - I enjoy yours, as well!

Jarie - The yellow ones are raspberries. You would think LV would have good produce so close to CA. The bread sounds heavenly.

    Scarlethue - Ahhhh summer!

Sylvia - This one had some great jewelry, too. And wine and lotions/soaps. Oh, and cheese!

Sarah - The strawberries are so red - I hope they taste as good as they look. The view is lovely, and the air light and fresh.

Kathy - I definitely want a green house.

Jeanette - We have to eat our fill before it's only apples and oranges.

Robert - Hope you are all settled into your new home!

Good Cook - I think eating fresh. Maybe strawberry shortcake. I'll check your blog for ideas.

  18. Everything looks ripe and luscious. Tomatoes are just now ripening, it's August 4th!

We've had soooo much rain this year, the local strawberries had little flavor. I find myself buying California strawberries even tho' they're shipped cross country because they are better than the local ones.

  19. i love strawberries! They are the one fruit I can have while dieting because they are low carb, and those look way way better than the grocery store variety!

  20. That market is really good. The fruit especially berries look really fresh.

  21. California - Strawberries definitely need sunshine. How weird your summer has been.

    Trish - :-)

Nancy - I haven't tasted them yet, but they certainly look better than the ones in the store.

liven - I know! Everything even smells wonderful.

  22. I adore how your blog reminds of the items....NOT outside my door/window or IN my life...yet things of pure joy from past. Those Strawberries just look devine! I love summer!

  23. Strawberries? YUMMMM!!!

Their season is over here... you can get them at 5€ for 500g pack, too expensive and they're no longer very good. I miss them!

As for other berries... also available at scandalous prices! If I lived a bit further north or inland I could go berrying in the hills and get blackberries ("moras" here). I used to have so much fun doing that when I visited y grandparents at their summer retreat!

  24. Wow. My blackberry bushes have lots of berries but none are black yet. These and the selection of other berries you photographed are just flat out beautiful.

I am still making history on my Pick a Peck of Pixels blog. Today I posted a Zebra Butterfly with long tails. He is as big as your hand. Most have never seen one. Now you can see one at

  27. Pranky - Hopefully they taste good - I hate to be fooled by pretty food.

Kay - Thanks! I love summer, too.

Crazy - My brother has blackberry bushes - yum.

Abraham - Would love to see that butterfly - will stop on by - thanks.

Rain - Thanks. Hope you find a market.

Marguerite - They are still sleeping - because of fires they were diverted and did not get here until 3:00 a.m.!

  28. Wow what a nice piece. It makes me want to visit the market here in Rotterdam (although I usually hate the Rotterdam market because it's crowded and smelly). Very inspiring, especially the pictures! Thank you!

  29. Oh, berries. My favorite fruit. I ate an entire pin to raspberries while I cooked dinner last night. Give me a raspberry patch and I'm happy as a ... well, you know.

  30. Yummy, I think I am headed to the market myself after seeing those berries..... Great shots, they are very tempting!

  31. San Antonio has the greatest farmer's market! I think I might prefer a small one. You live in the most beautiful place! I am truly envious. I hope one day I can live somewhere so beautiful.
